click to view still by Josh HendersonWe finished shooting Ghosts With Shit Jobs, the new lo-fi sci-fi feature I wrote, just before Halloween. We’re currently looking for volunteers to help with post-production duties such as:

* soundtrack composition
* special effects and titling
* colour correction
* audio post and ADR

If you or someone you know are into finding out more, drop us a line! We unfortunately can’t pay up front, but click through to see if you’re excited enough by what we’ve shot so far to help us out anyway.

In 2040, a generation of Torontonians have grown up after the economic collapse of the west. The movie consists of episodes of a documentary series popular in mainland China about the bad jobs some white people have — the plucky and resilient souls unlucky enough to be born into the slums of North America are both amusing and moving to the Chinese audience.

Oscar Treadmill

Oscar is a digital janitor, and has to manually cover up logos for copyright reasons in the future’s answer to Google StreetView maps.

Oscar Chinese Restaurant

He doesn’t really know why he’s on a show about bad jobs, because he thinks his job is pretty great — he gets to see history come alive in front of his eyes, like the garbagemen who fancy themselves like archaeologists.

Oscar n Mom

But the long hours and loneliness are getting to him, especially since the death of his mother.

Karen Workshop

Gary and Karen are babymakers. They assemble robot baby dolls for the children of the wealthy in Asia.

Karen n Gary Dinner

They’re so indistinguishable from real babies that the crying, diapers and feeding of a half-dozen units at once is driving the couple a little crazy and straining their relationship. Both of them are hugely overqualified for the job, but while Gary has a reasonable ten-year plan, the more ambitious Karen would do anything to be making battlebots now.

Anton Toph

Anton and Toph are silk collectors. Twenty years ago a herd of gigantic spiders ran amok over the eastern seaboard after a genelab outbreak, leaving behind buildings swathed in spider web silk.

Karrento Bros Climb Bridge

Although highly toxic and difficult to collect, people like Anton and Toph risk their lives to get it — it’s worth its weight in gold as an ultrastrong building material.

The Bridge

Anton, the enthusiastic and delusional older brother, loves the idea of becoming famous for collecting the Tower silk. Toph, the more intelligent younger brother who actually does the collecting, knows it’s a deathtrap.

Avinash n Serina

Serina is human spam. She makes a living by mentioning brands and products in casual conversation, and is credited based on their status and wealth.

Serina to the Washroom

Because of the life she’s chosen, she’s disconnected from friends and family but protected by a lipstick-sized tazer and her “people” in the Nigerian cartel.

Serina n Labcoat

A chameleon and professionally skilled at reinvention, her good humour and friendliness is only skin deep — beneath it is a cold and ruthless survivor.

  1. Wow! That’s an interesting story for a movie, flipping around the notion of “third-world country” (and I come from one). Will it be available to the rest of the world?

    Also there are already people with Serina’s job…

  2. Hi Tiara– thanks! It will be available to the world at some point, for sure.

    And sure, human spamming is happening already, but by 2040 it’s become refined in interesting ways.

  3. I’d be interesting in seeing more and fronting a soundtrack, possibly.

    Let me know what’s fresh.

  4. hey,

    I’m currently enrolled in the post graduate post production program at Humber College. I’d be interested in doing some post audio work for your film. I’m currently using Pro Tools 8 at home and am situated in downtown Toronto.

  5. Yeah that human spam thing is FREAKY and CREEPY! I’m glad Jim’s got it in there. Not many people know that it’s happening NOW and it’s not sci fi! 😛
    Can’t wait to see the final film!!

  6. I’ve wanted to move into scoring movies, I’m a music producer in Eugene, Oregon. What type of music would you be looking for (mood, feel, original, sound track etc.)

    thanks, Casey Wheeler

  7. Congrats!!!

    Working on my next comic book now, and three novels. I am so happy you could make it, sign me on for one DVD and BTW, IF you complete your post-prod, have you though of submitting your movie for the Fantasia Festival in Montréal?

  8. Thanks guys for the support and offers of help!

    Fantasia’s deadline is May 5th, so hoping to have a cut to submit to that.

  9. Hi Jim!

    Hope all is going well. Have you found your soundtrack composer? On which form should a composer or music student bring you the theme?

    On the good news, I wrapped up my next comic book, on the Fantasia theme. It should be launched in Quebec next April. I put a small “ghost with shit jobs” scribble on a character’s T-shirt. Is it OK with you?

    You may use my email address.

  10. We’ve had an amazing response for composers, so I think we’re good for now. And for sure, that t-shirt sounds funny! Congrats on finishing your latest comic book.

  11. It’s a rather shitty scribble.
